Because of the association with the African work I thought first of making the piece in wood. This would have created a discontinuity of grains, if fabricated, or an exposure of end grain if cut from a single block. I then considered brass, but decided that if cast it would be too expensive; if built up, the seams would show, and this would reduce the solidity of the piece. I settled in favor of welded steel.
