“The profile of Playground had been used in a painting done in 1961. I didn’t realize this at the time that the sculpture was first drawn. I like shapes of this kind; they remind me of the plans of ancient buildings made with mud brick walls. The black horizontal sections of such buildings printed in handbooks have about the same relationship of black to white as many of these pieces. At least there is an association in my mind.”
